Learn how to train a dog with these 8 steps - Being Dog

Those starry eyes are often difficult to not fall in love with. As soon as you become a new dog owner and bring your little buddy home, you adore and give him everything to make him happy. But, in the same process, it is possible that you might be spoiling him. It is quite common with Indian Dog Owner, as after adopting a dog, we might not teach him early lessons. So today we are going to list 8 steps necessary for you to train your dog to be disciplined and be a loving companion for you & your family for the coming years.

1. Naming your dog:

Ya I know, you must be thinking that this is very common and everyone does it. The moment you bring your dog home, you give him a name and don’t even require any “Namkaran” ceremony for it as well. But it’s not for you but your dog to know his name.

Dogs are only intelligent enough to know some of the tone & singular word. So it is very important to let know your dog, what he is supposed to be called. Make sure every time you say his/her name, he looks directly toward you.

2. Potty Training:

Another crucial training, if you don’t want your dog to be soiling your living room. This could be after your buddy is 12-16 weeks older as then they have good control over their bladder.

You can attach him with a leash and you two could have a walk outside. Remember to always introduce him to a word with the activity you’re doing, like you can say, “Go Pee Pee” or something which suits your language. This way he could figure out that “Go Pee Pee” means to lose their excrement.

Also, after this, you should reward him with the treat or high praise like “Yes!” or something in your language but appreciative in tone, so he might know that good behavior is always rewarded. Later on, you could introduce your dog to your own bathroom to know the place best for “Pee Pee” whenever not outside.

Be Careful! When it comes to potty training a dog, you may fail with this attempt at first and your puppy surely will wet the living room corner a couple of times. If you catch him doing the deed, strongly express him by saying a firm, “No” or “Bad dog” (or anything with a tone that shows disapproval).

If you didn’t catch him doing the deed and later find out about it, don’t punish your dog for that as he won’t in anyways relate your punishment with that particular activity and also this would surely impact your relationship with your dog.

3. Playing behavior:

During the puppy stage, your dog loves to play a lot. As they are exploring the world with their muzzle and biting new things with their new teeth, it is important for them to know how strong their bites should be.  As I have covered it in the blog post of 7 Reason why a dog bites, you should probably check it out too.

While playing with them, if they try to bite you hard, you should surely respond with an abrupt voice like, “Ouch!” making them fully known for your response. You must also stop playing with him for 5-10 minutes which will imply that biting is wrong and could result in ‘No Play’.

This also includes that you should firmly stop him with, “No” when he tries to tear your sheet or scratches your furniture. But you should only respond to him when they are doing it at that particular moment only.

4. Focus:

Like us, dogs are also eager to not pay attention when we were told to. Like when you’re playing with your dog and suddenly an ambulance passes by with a siren sound, distracting him from you. It is very important for you that you increase your dog focus. This will make him more receptive to newer things & environment and would not easily get freaked out during your outdoor walks.

You can start this by saying his name & when he looks at you rewarding him with a treat. Slowly as training goes on, call his name and when he stares at you for 3-4 seconds then give him the treat. This will lead to more of him being the focus. Try this training in a different environment.

This training would help you to calm your dog during desperate times as well. Once you trained your dog to be more focus; you could easily make him stay and sit.

5. Come:

Another useful training to call your dog towards you when said. This is command is very useful when you go with your dog in an open playground without a leash. But I would highly recommend you to start with your home.

Your dog must be trained to come to you anytime you say or he could raise some trouble out there. First, you have to call his name to gain your dog’s attention, and then gently command him to “Come”. If he gets confuses you could physically help him to get to your position and then treating him.

This could be a bit tricky at first but with time your dog will surely master it. It is also advisable to carry on this training with the different environments like your building’s compound or playground or else. Be sure that your dog is introduced to every scenario your dog is supposed to be in.

I have seen many dog owners struggling with their dogs once they are freed from their leash. Dogs with such training would surely make sure that you aren’t doing cardio once your dog loses his collar.

6. Sit:

Puppy Sitting

Another good command helps you when your dog gets excited for the food or other dog or guest. This command helps him to sit quietly and wait for the next action.

You could initiate this training by calling your dog name to get his attention and then gently with your palm facing dog, get your hand above his head.

This will physically lead him to sit on his butt. Once done successfully you must treat him so he might learn and do it next time when heard this word, “Sit”. Again, call his name, order to sit and wait for 2 seconds before giving him the treat. Gradually, increase the time interval between the treat, to make your dog more polite and focus.

7. Stay: –

You must have noticed that when you come back from the market with your bag in your hand, your dog really gets excited, expecting some treat for him as well.

This is adorable only sometimes but it will surely become frustrating as the time passes. Your dog needs to know the word, “Stay”.

This could be done similar to previous, “Sit” training. After your dog learn how to sit, train them to stay there for 10 seconds. Once done successfully reward them with a tasty treat.

Increase the time of stay with regular training and your dog will find a lot of focus and stability in the various situations over time.

8. Home Alone Training: –

Dogs are like babies. They have separation anxiety too. For, those who don’t know the term, it is when you leave your home, your dog panics in your absence and tries to claw itself hurting himself in the process of destroying your furniture or sheets or ravaging kitchen. Excessive barking and whining during your absence is also a common sign of separation anxiety.

It is a serious issue to deal with. To know more about separation anxiety, read our article on separation anxiety in dogs.

It happens with most of the dog owners. As a result, they tie their dog or crate them, making them more like a prisoner. This really had a bad effect on your dog as he gets more anxious and aggressive eventually. This is the reason why many societies in India won’t allow dog owners in their building.

To cope up with this, try dog daycare facilities near you or get the help of your relative or friend who stays at home. For not so long hours outing; this could be avoided by training your dog to play with other toys and introducing them to such conditions at the puppy stage only. (Be sure to always leave enough food, puzzle game & water for your dog when you leave home.)

First, make your dog sit down & then try to walk to the door and then walk out of the door and come back within a few seconds & then reward him with a treat. Make sure you do this exercise often as a dog will come to know that when you go out it’s actually rewarding for them and they won’t get panic in the future.

I always refer to Zak’s video when it comes to training. If you want to learn more about how to deal with the dog’s separation anxiety watch below video.

Note: This training wouldn’t work without a proper treat. Your dog must be knowing that by doing certain work they are treated well. There are various treats available in market. Click here to check new offers.
